What exactly sets holistic dentistry apart from traditional dentistry? Surprisingly, even some people who immerse themselves in a holistic lifestyle are not fully aware of what holistic dentistry is, or that holistic dentists, such as myself, even exist!
Holistic dentistry begins with the philosophy that the dentist uses, rather than the actual practice or technique of oral care. As a starting point, the health of your entire body is integrally connected to your oral health. Thus, the way that we approach dentistry focuses on overall health and extends far beyond your smile.
It is well-documented in the scientific literature that there is a strong connection between inadequate dental care and gum disease to problems like; heart disease, diabetes, and pregnancy issues. Therefore, we focus on optimizing overall health and wellness, in addition to your oral health and the appearance of your smile, which are also of critical importance. Our focus on your oral health impacts your overall wellbeing, rather than just focusing on your teeth and gums, is one thing that differentiates holistic dentistry from traditional dentistry.
Another major difference between holistic and traditional dentistry methods are the way that we treat oral health issues. Because it has been demonstrated that many traditional dental materials are toxic to the body, holistic dentists will not perform treatments such as; mercury fillings, root canal therapy, and fluoride treatments. In fact, is has been our experience that patients’ health can be improved by safely removing these toxic substances, such as mercury fillings and root canals, from the mouth by use of safe and consistent protocols. Such protocols include ozone therapy in which we use the safe substance of oxygen to treat dental concerns, as well as whole-body wellness and nutrition. By the same token, holistic dentists seek to use materials that are biocompatible (compatible with each individual patient’s body), and at the same time provide reliable results.
I focus on whole-body health that starts with the oral environment. I know that disease can be prevented and treated with proper oral care and nutrition, and I want to share that knowledge and care with you. You will leave the dentist not only with a clean and healthy smile; which, as a cosmetic specialist I can provide, but also with a plan for overall health and wellness that addresses oral health, nutrition, fitness, supplements, and lifestyle. I look forward to working with you on your path to wellness!
